I. What is EFT and what does it do:

EFT is like an emotional form of acupuncture without needles: Ancient Chinese wisdom tells us that every human body has an energy system. This system can be healed by stimulating energy/stress points on the body. In EFT you tap on these points to release and clear negative emotional stress, trauma and beliefs old and new. EFT is a simple, elegant technique that anyone can use. The very basic EFT process can actually be learned in just a few minutes. Though for deep and complex issues more learning and/or facilitation by a practitioner is necessary.

How does EFT compare to talk therapy?: Traditional therapy tends to just name and rearrange your mental/emotional issues and requires a large amount of will power to make changes. EFT is a method that actually allows you to clear out these mental/emotional issues for good. Imagine for a moment that your mind is like a dirty house filled with traumas, negative emotions and beliefs, steadily piling up since birth because until now you have had no cleaning or clearing tools. Maybe you have been to therapy and it has allowed you to name and walk around some of the piles of old stuff but nothing has really helped clean the mess. EFT is a tool to clear it out deeply and effectively.

Does this seem too good to be true? Well I thought so too the first time I heard about EFT. This all changed when I suspended my disbelief and tried it anyway. I soon began dissolving deep emotional issues from my past. For more details you can read my healing story. Also check out testimonials from my clients.

So how does it work?: EFT launches off the "EFT Discovery Statement" which states...

"The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."

To do the technique you sequentially tap on a series of 9 well established energy points while focused on what bothers you. This tapping balances the energy system and releases negative emotion, stress and trauma. These emotional and mental changes tend to be permanent when done well. (To learn these tapping points watch the video or download the pdf at the top of this page).

In this context negative emotion can be anything that bothers you. This includes emotions such as anger or fear. This also includes beliefs like "I'm a looser" or "I can't do anything right". These negative emotions and beliefs can be the result of a memory or trauma that still bothers you from the past such as "the car crash" or "the time my dad hit my mom" or any other trauma.

In addition because our physical pains and diseases seem to be connected with our emotions EFT often works to get relief from physical issues as well. This is because of the second discovery of EFT...

"Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases."

This common sense approach draws its power from (1) time-honored Eastern discoveries about subtle energy in the body that have been around for over 5,000 years in the form of acupuncture and acupressure and (2) Albert Einstein, who told us back in the 1920's that everything (including our bodies) is composed of energy. These ideas have been largely ignored by western healing practices and that is why EFT often works where nothing else will.

You will find that EFT is usually quite gentle and you can often achieve substantial relief with little emotional pain. This is not true for everyone, however. Some people's issues are so intense that the mere mention of them causes emotional pain. However, given time, even these are often resolved with EFT.

EFT can be used for specific issue such as clearing the emotion from a specific trauma as well as more general issues such as poor self-image or perfectionism. Since "all negative emotion is caused by a disruption in the body's energy system" EFT is a very versatile tool that can be used to get great results for a very wide variety of emotional, mental and physical issues. "Even in the hands of most newcomers, EFT often achieves either
noticeable improvements or complete cessation of the client's problem. For those practitioners who learn the advanced [EFT] work, there are much higher success rates. Many skilled practitioners get measurable results over 80% of the time. In addition, the process is often rapid, long lasting and gentle and sometimes works when nothing else will."

Tapping Points

3. If you want to try it on your own before you have any sessions...

I. Go to the free EFT introductory workshop I offer once per month in Eugene (visit my events page here for details).
II. Read more about it and view videos on the national EFT website www.eftuniverse.com.

The key to success with EFT on your own is to be specific and persistent while trying it on any emotional or physical issue that is present for you. Newcomers are often able to get upwards of 50% success rate when diligent.

Though the basics of EFT are simple, learning this technique and doing it deeply and effectively on your own can be a lot to take in at the beginning. The EFT process is somewhat unusual looking and may challenge some of your beliefs about what is possible and how emotional healing works. If you want to do some work on your own I find it is most helpful to start by learning the basics of EFT directly from another person. The information on this site including the videos and "the basic EFT tapping process sheet" can get you started understanding what EFT is and what it looks like. Some people report results after learning these basics without direct help, though I find most people need more in depth instruction.

For beginning direct instruction I offer a free 90 minute EFT introductory workshop once per month in Eugene (go to my events page here for details). If you are not in Eugene but want to do some work on your own there may be someone who teaches EFT in your area. Otherwise I advise you to learn it in sessions with me or to purchase DVD's that show extensively how to do EFT well.

If you are interested in EFT sessions fill out my new client form here or contact me. I offer all new clients a 15 minute free consultation.
